That lineage, unbroken for over two and a half centuries, is now hanging by a thread. Fewer than 300 breeding mares remain worldwide.
This portrait was made during the Wild Hearts project — six years documenting our rare native horse breeds in the UK. I wanted to capture what is so often missed in photographs of heavy horses — the intelligence, the sensitivity, the quiet dignity behind all that power.
This is not just a horse. This is living history.
