There is something about the Fell Pony on high ground that feels inevitable — as though the landscape made them, and they simply stayed. An endangered native breed, shaped by centuries of Cumbrian fell life, there are fewer than 800 remaining in the UK.
This image was made during the Wild Hearts project — six years documenting all thirteen of the UK's rare native horse breeds. The fell was vast. The pony was not small.
Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag with natural deckle edges, float mounted to reveal the full character of the paper, hand signed, numbered, and packaged by me before it leaves for its new home.
