The Dales Pony is one of Britain's most endangered native breeds — powerful, intelligent, and deeply connected to the upland landscapes of northern England. Once indispensable to the lead mining industry of the Pennines, today fewer than 5,000 remain worldwide.
This image was made during the Wild Hearts project — a six-year journey documenting all thirteen of Britain's rare native horse breeds. I wanted to get close. Close enough to feel the weight of that mane, the warmth of the breath in the cold air. This is what I found.
Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag archival paper, hand signed, numbered, and packaged by me before it leaves for its new home.
