They stood their ground in the snow as though the cold was nothing. The Dales Pony has always been like that — steady, sure, built for the hardest landscapes northern England could offer. Once the backbone of the Pennine lead trade, carrying impossibly heavy loads across moorland tracks that would defeat most breeds. Today critically endangered, their numbers a fraction of what they once were.
I found this group on a winter morning, the snow still fresh, the light flat and quiet. They watched me back.
