They were walking away when I made this photograph. The mare and her foal, moving together into the light, the air full of something — pollen, dust, summer — caught for just a moment before they were gone.
The Cleveland Bay is the UK's oldest native horse breed, and one of its most endangered. Pure Cleveland Bays number fewer than 500 worldwide. They have carried kings, pulled carriages, and shaped the bloodlines of countless other breeds — and yet most people have never heard of them.
This image was made during the Wild Hearts project — six years documenting all thirteen of the UK's rare native horse breeds before their stories are lost. Some moments ask to be followed. This one asked to be remembered.
