They came down the mountain as one — a river of manes and hooves and breath, the old stone wall curving behind them like it has always been there, because it has. The Carneddau ponies of Snowdonia have roamed these slopes for thousands of years, largely unchanged, shaped by the same wind and rain and mountain light that shaped the landscape itself.
There are perhaps only 200 of these ponies left. They survive because of the mountain farmers who have gathered and cared for them across generations, year after year, on these same hillsides.
I stood very still. They came anyway.
