There's an old belief in the Camargue that these horses were born of the sea itself, foaled from the foam where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, older than memory and belonging to no one. Locals call them the horses of the sea. Watching one move through shallow water, it's easy to believe it.
This print captures that moment, a white horse of the Camargue caught mid-gallop through the shallows, mane lifting, water breaking around its legs as though the sea were reluctant to let it go.
Cyanotype felt like the only true way to hold this image. The process folds horse, water and sky into a single blue, so the print doesn't just show a horse in water, it dissolves the line between the two entirely, the way legend always insisted there wasn't one.
Each print is hand-coated and exposed individually, which means no two are ever quite the same. Small variations in tone and brushwork are part of the process, not a flaw in it, so the piece you own is a genuine original, not a reproduction.
Sea Horse is the first print in a new collection following these semi-wild white horses of southern France, a thread that sits alongside my ongoing work with Britain's native breeds, different landscape, same instinct: that these animals are never really separate from the land and water that shaped them.
