Shire Horse — Wild Hearts Series

from £595.00

She stood at the field edge and looked straight at me. That is the Shire — unhurried, unintimidated, entirely present. The tallest of the UK's native horse breeds, and once the engine of British agriculture. At the height of their working life there were over a million Shires in the UK. The largest horse ever recorded was a Shire — a 19th century giant named Sampson, standing over 21 hands tall. Today fewer than 2,000 remain.

This portrait was made during the Wild Hearts project — six years documenting all thirteen of the UK's rare native horse breeds before their stories are lost. I wanted to get close enough to see the individual — not the breed, not the history, but this particular horse, on this particular winter morning, in this particular light.

Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag with natural deckle edges, float mounted to reveal the full character of the paper, hand signed, numbered, and packaged by me before it leaves for its new home.
