Eriskay Pony III — Wild Hearts Series

from £595.00

Dark against pale sky. That silver mane just beginning. Something ancient and utterly self-contained in this young face.

This is an Eriskay foal — and there is something quietly miraculous in that. Eriskay Ponies are born dark, their coats deepening to near black in those first weeks of life. Then, slowly, over months and years, they lighten. This dark foal will one day be pale as sea mist.

The Eriskay Pony is one of the rarest native breeds in the UK — fewer than 300 remaining worldwide, all descended from ponies that have lived on this remote Hebridean island for centuries. Every foal born is precious beyond measure.

This photograph was made during the Wild Hearts project — six years documenting all thirteen of the UK's rare native horse breeds. The Eriskay required the longest journey of the project. Finding this foal there felt like a gift.

Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag with natural deckle edges, float mounted to reveal the full character of the paper, hand signed, numbered, and packaged by me before it leaves for its new home.
