That thick, woolly island coat. That mane catching the Atlantic wind. That particular quality of Hebridean light — soft, diffuse, belonging to nowhere else on earth.
The Eriskay Pony has lived on this remote Scottish island for centuries, shaped entirely by the landscape that surrounds it. One of the UK's rarest native breeds, with fewer than 300 remaining worldwide. They survived because the island kept them, and because the island people kept them.
This image appears in the Wild Hearts monograph — a six-year photographic project documenting all thirteen of the UK's rare native horse breeds. Of all the breeds I photographed, the Eriskay felt the most like finding something that had almost been lost.
Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag with natural deckle edges, float mounted to reveal the full character of the paper, hand signed, numbered, and packaged by me before it leaves for its new home.
Limited edition of 25. Once sold, this image is retired permanently.
